Digital marketing and social media
The first thing you should do is get your business online. Invest in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). You can employ other companies to do this on your behalf. SEO and SEM activity will ensure you are more visible online, resulting in greater consumer exposure and more leads and/or product sales.
You should also invest the time in setting up a Facebook page and a LinkedIn account. It is important to note that your Facebook page will have to be updated on a regular basis.
Blog
Blogging allows you show off your expertise, offer advice and share knowledge on your product or service. In addition, blogs allow you to create regular content and boost your visibility.
Network
Get to know your local media as this could lead to opportunities for your business to be profiled. Local newspaper editors are always looking for feel good human interest stories about the community. Use this to your advantage and offer up success stories you’ve had with customers. You may also want to network with industry publications and offer to write a column.
Join a Business Chamber
Your nearest business chamber will provide you with advice and provide an opportunity to network with like minded people - other small business owners in the area. They hold seminars and offer courses and events. These are all great opportunities to learn how to run your business more effectively, as well as learn from other’s mistakes and triumphs. Moreover, your local and state business chambers may host awards ceremonies to recognise high-performing businesses, and if you’re fortunate enough to receive one you’ll have bragging rights.
Participate
If you can afford to, sponsor local sports teams and attend local events. This will be great exposure for your brand and get you in front of more potential customers.
Consistency
Whatever tactics you do decide to employ, ensure that you’re consistent. There’s no point attending one community fair, or posting a blog every now and then. Consistency will ensure brand strength and recognition. Whatever your goals are, the best way to achieve them is through clear, consistent messaging.
