The suburb of Hillarys is a northern coastal suburb of Perth. It’s situated approximately 21 kilometres north-north west of the Perth CBD and belongs to the City of Joondalup in the Whitfords precinct. It is an estimated 6.4 square kilometres in size.
Hillarys was named after an early settler in the area, Bertram John Hillary. But the Government only officially gazette the suburb in 1971.
Hillarys Boat Harbour was established in preparation for the 1987 America’s Cup at Fremantle, making it the first major marina in the north metropolitan area. A retail precinct was also built on the site called Sorrento Quay. The marina development and shopping centre escalated growth in the area and by the mid-1990s, both the southwest and northwest of Hillarys had been fully established.
In the 2016 census, the population was recorded as 10,847 – an increase from 10,680 in 2011. The predominant age group in Hillarys is 50-59 years old, with households being primarily couples with children.
Homeowners in Hillarys are likely to be repaying $3000 - $3999 per month on their home loan repayments. In 2016, 82.6% of homes were owner-occupied – up from 81% in 2011.
Currently, the median sales price of houses in Hillarys is $800,000. With the average rent prices in the area being $475 a week.
The suburb is mostly a residential area, relying on large shopping centre Westfield Whitford City and smaller Hillarys Shopping Centre on Flinders Avenue for it’s commercial services.
St. Mark’s Anglican Community School is a co-educational private school located west of Westfield Whitford City that offers Kindergarten to Year 12. Hillarys Primary School also serves the suburb, and in addition, it also falls within Padbury Senior High School’s catchment area.
There are 19 parks and several walkways throughout the suburb, and also picnic facilities in a coastal park near Hillarys Boat Harbour. Just off the coast is Marmion Marine Park, which is home to a number of species of marine wildlife.
Hillarys Boat Harbour serves as a tourism hub, featuring Sorrento Quay retail precinct and food outlets, and Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA). There are also helicopter tours and whalewatching cruises, as well as ferry services to Rottnest Island.
